- people from four countries, and even more cultural backgrounds, and many denominational traditions. We went through case studies, and talked a lot about the issues we face here in Mexico.

As we talked about the issues we face, and possible solutions, again and again we came to the same conclusion - people need to be taught "the whole counsel of God" - Genesis to Revelation.

We've all heard of chronological Bible studies (ie New Tribes) and storying and Tim Blycker's way cool Walk-Thru the Bible seminar, all stuff like that there. But often we hear about it in a tribal context - missionary comes, learns some of the language and culture, tells the whole tribe the story of redemption from index to maps, and gazillions come to the Lord.

But I brought up in our classes the fact that we're in a radically different context.

It's a context that needs the whole counsel of God more than ever, because the Lie is in such a complex form here in urban Mexico.

However, getting the complete attention of a group of people for weeks on end to go through the whole Bible with them is - apart from a miracle - a pipe dream. Too many distractions, work commitments, lack of commitment - whatever it may be.

So we need it more than ever - and can't do it. Or can we?

First question - what have you done in the past to make sure the whole counsel of God is getting to people? I'm curious to know your experiences and ideas in this area.

Second question - what if we put together say a 10 week evangelistic Bible study that actually went through the whole Bible? Sure, it's not ideal - how in-depth can you get in 10 weeks? However, there is a chance people could actually make it to a majority of the meetings.

But if we had organized material - we can hand out notes to those who missed a week.

And it would be a start. Much more adapted to the frantic urban culture.

I know things like this are being done to some extent. I found some materials somewhere that might work as a good base to create something out of.

What do you think? What materials have you seen? Do you think such a study would fly?

And in our churches - maybe a similar study would work. I'll bet we could get people excited about it!

Hey, I went crazy one time with a friend and did a summary of the Bible in two hours. Surely we could do it in 10.

All right, I'll be quiet - let me know what you think.

More on Mexico's Narco Battle

Please click HERE The Fry family left Ixtapaluca around 9:30 and cruised into ELA around 10:45, for Maranatha Bible Church's Sunday service. We had initially planned to go last week, but our time was postponed due to the piggy flu.

The flu, actually, was the theme for my sermon. We all have a virus far more deadly than influenza porcina. We've sinned, and sin brings death, but Christ brings life. He is our divine antidote.

The church is about a year old, but attendance was right around 50, with several families absent. Chalo and Beth's servant ministry there was evident. Because we were visitors, we received a small loaf of bread, representing the Bread of Life, what Maranatha exists to distribute. After the service, we enjoyed coffee and a special cupcake-cake. A cake composed of cupcakes. Unique. It said "Congrats Mamas" on the top.

My kids loved dinner at the Sandoval's house. They like "American" food, we were told. They loved playing with the Sandoval's two dogs, climbing trees, you name it. Aaron and Natalie Sandoval joined us for lunch. What a great time we had!

I gained a new appreciation for Chalo and Beth's commitment to the local church. When you say "Sandovals" you think "ELA." But the Sandoval family is very obviously committed to planting churches...Maranatha is the 4th (or 5th?) church plant they have been involved in. That's HUGE!

Prayer request from Beth Sandoval

Pray for my dad. He has an infection in his left middle finger that has swollen the finger to double the size, very painful and certainly impossible to function caring for my mom and Brendy. The liquid from his top joint has leaked for years, but this time it got infected and has the red moving up his hand hear his wrist. I think I have all that info correct. He is on antibiotics but the meds and the infection are hard on his already tired body. Today Brendy is in what they call surgery…she is in the hospital for an injection of something into her hip to help with pain and movement. That happened at 10 AM today. My mom is barely coming out of her reaction (very early reaction and long lasting, incredible weakness) to the latest chemo. Not an easy time for them. Bobbie and Steve are doing double duty to help them. Thanks for praying.

BETH

Team stuff

A few of you have had questions regarding team responsibilities lately. He was a colorful character who used to ride the New York City fire trucks, raid speakeasies with the police department, take entire orphanages to baseball games, and whenever the New York newspapers were on strike, he would go on the radio and read the Sunday funnies to the kids. One bitterly cold night in January of 1935, the mayor turned up at a night court that served the poorest ward of the city. LaGuardia dismissed the judge for the evening and took over the bench himself.

Within a few minutes, a tattered old woman was brought before him, charged with stealing a loaf of bread. She told LaGuardia that her daughter's husband had deserted her, her daughter was sick, and her two grandchildren were starving. But the shopkeeper, from whom the bread was stolen, refused to drop the charges. "It's a real bad neighborhood, your Honor." the man told the mayor. "She's got to be punished to teach other people around here a lesson." LaGuardia sighed. He turned to the woman and said "I've got to punish you. The law makes no exceptions--ten dollars or ten days in jail." But even as he pronounced sentence, the mayor was already reaching into his pocket. He extracted a bill and tossed it into his famous sombrero saying: "Here is the ten dollar fine which I now remit; and furthermore I am going to fine everyone in this courtroom fifty cents for living in a town where a person has to steal bread so that her grandchildren can eat. Mr. Baliff, collect the fines and give them to the defendant." So the following day the New York City newspapers reported that $47.50 was turned over to a bewildered old lady who had stolen a loaf of bread to feed her starving grandchildren, fifty cents of that amount being contributed by the red-faced grocery store owner, while some seventy petty criminals, people with traffic violations, and New York City policemen, each of whom had just paid fifty cents for the privilege of doing so, gave the mayor a standing ovation.

Brennan Manning, The Ragamuffin Gospel, Multnomah, 1990, pp 91-2.

Sermon illustration for this Sunday

I preach once again this Sunday on Romans, the text is Romans 3:21-31. He's already been judged...our sin in him!

Brought back a lot of memories of our talks about this very subject. You can read it by clicking HERE.

Here's a Ken joke:

Enhanced Security at Airport

Recent USAToday report...

http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2009-02-07-mexico-violence_N.htm?csp=usat.me

LA Times articles on the drug war.
